Internet Marketing and Flying blind

When it comes to internet marketing you would be amazed at the number of companies and individuals who are literally flying blind.

They are flying blind because they don?t have the data to understand what is happening, they don?t realise where they are right now with regards to their business and the internet and therefore they don?t know where they are going or where they could go.

Read any personal coach like Tony Robbins and Earl Nightingale and they tell you that success is the progressive realisation of a goal. You need to have that goal to achieve and then take massive action in order to attain that goal.

Yet when it comes to the internet marketing, most of the people I talk to cannot tell you the very basics such as how many visitors they get to their website each month. In terms of having a goal, such as generating a sales lead, getting a website visitor to call them or get the website visitor to visit their physical stores or retailers who stock their products, these business owners just don?t have these goals.

Ok alot of companies and people maybe late adopters when it comes to the internet but the alternative is to be like Fopp Records.

Here is a high street music retailer that made a profit in the last financial year and now they are in receivership 12 months later. Why? Of course it?s easy with hindsight. They sold cd?s and dvd?s at discounted rates and just ignored the impact of Amazon selling music and dvd?s, they ignored the Itunes effect of people downloading and buying singles and not full albums, all the mp3 download site and the illegal file sharing.

They are and were all flying blind when it comes to the internet marketing.

It?s not that difficult really to change or get started in internet marketing. It?s just a case of figuring out ?where you we right now? and ?where you want to go??

And the single biggest change you can make right now is to install google analytics onto your website.

Firstly install Google Analytics Simply visit http://www.google.com/analytics and sign up for a google analytics account if you don't already have one. Once you are inside your google analytics account, go to Add website profile aned type in the name of your domain name. Then google will provide you with tracking code which you need to install on all pages of your website. This is best achieved by adding the tracking code to your website template just before the tag. If you don't know how to do this, get your web developer or someone responsible for your website to do this for you.

Google Analytics is quite simply the mother of all internet marketing tool and what is more, it is a cheap and free (if you can install yourself) internet marketing tool.

Now, you probably have a mental idea of what the purpose of your website is. Generally people and companies use a website to:

Generate sales leads or phone calls Generate online sales Drive prospective customers to an offline store, location or re-seller.

Next you need to set up at least one goal. So if you sell stuff online, the goal page will be your order confirmation page or checkout page. For me, the main goal I am trying to achieve is to generate a email registration, so my goal page is my registration thank you page. Make a mental note to re-visit google analytics in one month's time.

Secondly, download this spreadsheet which gives you key marketing metrics and how to find them and track them inside you google analytics account.

After a month fill in this marketing metrics spreadsheet and revisit your goals. You are now in a position to start making internet marketing decisions based around the goals you've set for your company.
