Carma Streams Into Film History as First US Feature Film Distributed Exclusively on the Internet via Revolutionary DVD-quality Pay-per-view System

Santa Clara, CA (PRWeb) December 31, 2006 -- Tonight, Carma streams into film history as the first feature film to launch exclusively on the Internet via streaming DVD-quality pay per view. The edgy, award-winning supernatural thriller about how our actions can come back to haunt us has been compared favorably to the work of Alfred Hitchcock, Quentin Tarantino, and David Lynch. Carma features the voice of Academy Award™-nominated actress Karen Black ("Five Easy Pieces", "Easy Rider", "The Great Gatsby") and a cast of "real people" including a San Quentin ex-convict and the film's up-and-coming San Francisco-area director Ray Arthur Wang. Breaking the shackles of traditional film distribution rules, Carma premieres tonight at a gala party at Santa Clara Convention Center and is now available for preview by press and reviewers. It will be released to the public in January by FastMovie.TV for $4.99 per view at http://www.carmamovie.com.

Revolutionizes film distribution and marketing with "Viral Broadcasting"

Carma represents the first step in a new era of completely digital filmmaking - the film was created from start to finish entirely on a Macintosh notebook computer: writing, cinematography, editing, production and now, distribution. The filmmakers, Ray Arthur Wang and Anand Chandrasekaran (both Stanford University engineering school graduates) chose to bypass traditional distribution offers to leap forward into the daring Internet distribution deal because of their deep technology backgrounds.

"Even after winning awards at film festivals, it can be difficult for films to achieve a distribution deal," Carma's director Ray Arthur Wang said. "Every year, thousands of quality films get made but are never seen at all. Internet distribution will dramatically revolutionize the way films are distributed and viewed, making the process of releasing independent films faster, more democratic and dramatically less expensive."

Carma is also the first film in history to leverage "viral broadcasting" - the film is marketed with an affiliate program that lets fans and viewers share a percentage of the profits. Carma is spread "virally" on leading free video sites like You Tube, Google Video and Revver and social networks like MySpace and Friendster offering these sites (and anyone with a page on these sites) a percentage of revenue each time the film is viewed from their page or blog. Anyone who joins the "Tell a friend" program at http://www.carmamovie.com and promotes Carma will automatically make $1 every time the film is viewed from their page (or via email links they send to friends). This unique "two tier" affiliate program even rewards friends of friends who promote the film with a percentage of revenue.

Film distribution has scarcely changed since the film industry began in the 1920s. Traditional distribution requires a costly 35mm film print to be made and sent to every theatre where the film is screened. Marketing costs alone, according to Carma's Executive Producer Anand Chandrasekaran, often exceed the cost of making the film. The average film costs more than $2 million to distribute regardless of its production budget. High quality Internet distribution and viral marketing via affiliate programs like Carma's can lower the up front distribution costs to almost zero, making it possible for more filmmakers to have their work seen.

New Role Models

The film Carma is co-marketed by Nirvana Woman magazine, the premiere fashion/lifestyle magazine for South Asian Americans. "The makers of Carma are the new role models for young Asians, as more South and East Asian Americans step into the mainstream", said Jayashree Patil, Founder and President of Nirvana Woman. "They have won several awards, shown the film to great reception in over ten screenings by invitation worldwide, and were recently invited to the prestigious Sundance producers conference in Park City. We look forward to showcasing the success of Carma to audiences worldwide".

The technology behind the screens

Carma was made possible through an alliance of technology partners including Amazon.com, DivX and Level 3 Communications. Revolutionary FastMovie.TV technology and the DivX player will deliver full screen, broadcast quality video and sound direct to consumers on ordinary home DSL and cable lines. It will allow users to pause, skip back and forward or exit and return later to finish viewing the movie.

Viewers just pay $4.99 by Visa/MC or Pay Pal and can instantly see the film in beautiful DVD quality on their computer screen. This is the highest quality Internet film resolution available in the world today, 640 x 480, true DVD level quality that can be projected on a wall screen and still retain clarity.
